The Brief
A new build with a blank canvas. Part of the lawn was a major problem, since it didn’t seem to grow. The client wanted the garden to have a contemporary feel to include a large deck for entertaining, area for sun beds, large water feature, and some built in seating with some kind of screening to give a feeling of enclosure around them.

The New Design
Research showed that pre dating the house, a car park had been on the site, and probably remained under just a few inches of topsoil. This explained why an area of lawn didn’t seem to grow! It was decided that rather than excavate, the problem area of lawn would be built up with 6” timber sleepers, which painted black also gave the garden a modern look. Many tons of soil were imported to raise this area of lawn. A digger was used to break up the hardcore in areas to be planted. The new deck runs most of the length of the back of the house, surrounded by planting areas between deck and lawn. The built in seating area enclosed on two sides by louver screens which open or close depending on the mood, and also create wonderful shadows. Natural slate paving also gives a modern look to the area for the 2 sun beds. See More Larger Gardens
