ACORN GARDEN SERVICES

Channel 4’s “The Great Garden Challenge”

In spring 2005 our design for a Woodland garden was selected from almost 1000 applications to take us to round one of a TV competition “The Great Garden Challenge”, filmed in the grounds of Blenheim Palace. The TV crew filmed the construction which was shown at the end of the third day, as the judging went out live on TV. We were delighted to win through to the semi finals, giving us the opportunity to build 3 very different gardens.     Details of our 3 gardens follow.

Round One   - “If you go down the woods today” April 2005

Our  woodland garden “If you go down to the woods today…” included a stile, signpost, bark path, beautiful driftwood fencing screen, and aged logs which cross the bark path representing fallen trees.  The planting included 3 Silver Birch and 2 Whitebeams, with under planting  of a range of shade loving perennials including Erythronium, Aquilega, Ferns, Camassia, and Geum with  Digitalis, Aconitum and Deschampsia providing summer interest.   Also included are plenty of artificial toadstools, which featured throughout the season.

Quarter Final - “Mackintosh Ladies” – May 05

Our “Mackintosh Ladies” garden was so named after the 3 stained glass panels used within the garden. These were made using etched transfers on glass with bespoke trellis panels which further suggest the style of late 19th century Glaswegian designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh.    The trellis panels divided the garden creating interesting corners of planting to be discovered beyond.  The plants ranging from dark to pale blue were enhanced by the addition of contrasting pale creamy yellow and hot orange.

Semi Final - “A Pondside Palette” – June  05

“A Pondside Palette” provided us with the opportunity to plant using moisture loving plants. These were a very different group of plants to those used in our previous two gardens, and demonstrated further our horticultural knowledge.     The entrance to the garden, over a brick edged gravel path, stepped up to a timber jetty overhanging the pond, backed by a summer house ( façade only ).  The covered porch provided a shady place to sit and relax by the pond.   A beautiful glass sculpture of tall bulrushes added a surprise amongst the lush planting.
